Cruise Lore

Lost Tortugas

One of the more unique excursions Puerto Rico is kayaking on the bioluminescent bay at Laguna Grande. This is why cruise ships are often scheduled to depart at 11 PM or later from their stop in San Juan. The bioluminescent kayak tour is the last excursion to return before the ship departs the port. In 2023, this excursion return was delayed by over an hour due to an incident with a truck that broke down towing a boat, result in the only road out being blocked. Thus, the ship was significantly late leaving port.

Notably, there was an unofficial tour with many people from JoCo Cruise on it that was stuck in the same traffic as the official excursion bus. They were very lucky; cruise ships will only wait on official excursions.

The outfit this tour was with is named Las Tortugas, hence the moniker for the wayward cruisers, Lost Tortugas.
