Cruise Lore

San Juan Land Concert aka "Moisturico"

There was a concert planned on land in San Juan, Puerto Rico at Bahia Urbana, approximately a quarter mile walk from the ship. It was to feature concerts by Paul and Storm, Tune-Yards, Jill Sobule, a Jonathan Coulton full band show, and, finally, They Might Giants. The evening was punctuated with intermittent rain, causing some delays in the performances. Before They Might Be Giants was to perform around 10:00 PM, the rain intensified and showed no sign of letting up. There had been no rain plan, because no rain was forecast.

The P.A. system had been shut down on account of the rain, so a sopping wet, and aptly named, Storm was walking group to group to personally keep people updated. The land concert was canceled, and They Might Be Giants would not be able to perform. Attendees had been huddled together under whatever cover they could find, including a carousel for a handful of cruisers. Slowly people began the trek back to the ship, all unavoidably drenched to their cores. While disappointed, spirits were jovial; we were all in this together. People broke out in song, as JoCo Cruisers do.

At 11:00 PM, the post-show fireworks went off. Shortly after arriving on the ship, around 11:10, there was an announcement that anybody who was interested and able should make their way to the main theater.

They Might Be Giants would be performing after all...on the ship. In order for this to happen, because some of the band was not sailing and had flown directly to Puerto Rico, a last minute 'guest' had to be added to the ship log, which is no easy feat. Additionally, all of the equipment had to be hand carried onto the ship. And, most importantly, anybody not sailing would need to be off the ship by midnight or else there would be sizable fines. The theater was packed with people, many wearing their Holland America bathrobes. After the band played for a while, John asked for the time. 11:50, he was told. "We have time for one more song." They played until the last minute they were able, and had the non-passenger band members off the ship with four minutes to spare. It was an unforgettable evening for all.
