Cruise Lore

Gavin and the Volcano

A JoCo Cruise attendee, Gavin Verhey, was exploring Mount Liamuiga, an inactive volcano, on St. Kitts independently after the excursion he had planned was canceled. On his return from the peak, a misstep had him sliding down the cliffside. After much turmoil, he managed to claw his way back up the cliff and make it to the main road, where he encountered a search and rescue team that had been looking for him. While safe, he had missed the ship.

Gavin flew to the next stop, San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he tried to meet the ship. He promised his cab driver double if he got him to the ship on time. They arrived at the pier just in time to watch the ship sail away. "A man of my word, I did not pay my cab driver double," remarked Gavin in his blog entry on the subject.

The next stop for the cruise was Royal Caribbean's private resort at Labadee, Haiti. Against all advice and perhaps his better judgment, Gavin decided on one last attempt to meet up with the ship. He landed in Cap Haitian, and found a cab driver willing to take him to Labadee. With his and the cab driver's limited common languages, he made sure to clarify that he meant the resort and not the city Labadee by saying "los barcos gigantes." The cab driver had to stop short of Labadee because it is heavily guarded. Gavin was eventually allowed in, and after much paperwork, back onto the boat. From Gavin's blog, the Royal Caribbean employee remarked “I’ve been working as a manager for 20 years in places like this. I hear everything. You are the only passenger in the entire history of this port to ever board the ship here. The. Only. One."

Gavin does not recommend that you do the same.
